Basics of law for businessmen and business leaders

Setting up and running a business requires multi-disciplinary skills and knowledge. Besides domain knowledge and expertise, one needs to have a fairly good working knowledge of support services and disciplines. Working knowledge of business laws, however, requires systematic efforts for the same. Hoping to acquire it by experience would take too long and the hidden costs may turn out to be too high.

Our experience of dealing with business people for more than 40 years has convinced us that while a business leader need not be an expert of business laws, it is imperative that she acquires conceptual clarity of the basic concepts of all laws relating to her business. Obviously, she need not have knowledge of all nuances of all related laws, because neither is it necessary nor possible. In some cases, however, a specialist-like knowledge of the law relating to technical aspects of her business does provide a competitive edge.

It is in the backdrop of the above understanding, we intend to put out a series of essays, presentations, and small write-ups on the basic concepts of diverse business laws. By their very nature and format, they are not intended to be comprehensive.  More often than not, you may not find answers to problems and issues which are peculiar to your business and peculiar to your set of facts. For that, you may need to approach a domain expert. But it is hoped that when you interact with the experts, your communication with them is effortless, effective, and rewarding.
